Something Sweet provided Cappoquin, Co. Wateford trainer Roger McGrath with a welcome change of fortune when justifying good support in the Appleman’s Handicap Hurdle at Clonmel.
The Mahler mare broke her maiden tag here at the 17th attempt, and was supported on track from 5/1 into 7/2 favourite.
Sean O’Keeffe’s mount and Trans Wood were both prominent throughout, and settled down for a protracted battle from the penultimate flight.
Something Sweet got on top in the closing stages to prevail by three quarters of a length, while Ayr Of Elegance could only keep on at one pace a further six lengths back in third.
McGrath was bridging a gap of 20 months since his previous win under rules.
