Sunrise arrives late under Roche

Tue 23rd Aug 2011, 18:21

Leigh Roche conjured a late surge from Crimson Sunrise to claim the nursery at Killarney.

The daughter of Holy Roman Emperor was under pressure behind the leaders over a furlong from home but found another gear when switched out wide in the last 150 yards.

Dermot Weld 's charge ran on strongly in the closing stages to get up close home to pip well backed 6/4 favourite Secretary Of State (from 5/2) by half a length. Money Spider who had battled it out with Secretary Of State from over a furlong out, was just a head back in third.

The 6/1 winner scored over an extended five furlongs at Navan back in May but seemed to appreciate this step up in trip to a mile.

"Leigh gave her a very good ride and rode with great confidence," said Weld afterwards.

"She'll probably go for a similar nursery, maybe at Listowel. She likes the fast ground."
