Another day's racing, another multiple racing winning haul. That's the way of things at present for Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen, and they made it three in as many races at Leopardstown when Stormfly emerged victorious from the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes.
After the four-timer at Gowran yesterday, Stormfly's three and three parts of a length win brought up a scarcely believable seven-in-a-row for Weld and Smullen.
Stormfly, a daughter of Dark Angel and a 4/1 shot on this occasion, travelled well to lead a furlong and a half out and she was gone beyond recall from a furlong out, keeping on strongly for a ready success.
"She had to battle hard to win on her previous start and was a very fit filly coming here. She just done enough last time but obviously progressed," said Weld.
"She handles the ground well and quickened nicely. She was always a good filly and was stakes placed last year.
"We'll maybe look at the French Guineas. She's tough and genuine. She idles a bit and is a lazy filly. She only does what she has to. She's the sort of filly that could suit that sort of race.
"She has a wonderful temperament and is really laid back. The blinkers just make her concentrate.
"I bought her with Bobby O'Ryan for 38,000 Euros and she has done us proud. An Australian client of mine owns her (Dues Bros Syndicate) and he has got a nice filly."
The earlier Weld/Smullen winners on this card were Zannda and Zawraq
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Stroll Patrol (GB) trained by J.P. Murtagh was post race normal.
