Soldier back to form for Hennessy
The Hugo Thomas Handicap Hurdle at Down Royal looked an open contest but Soldier Bay took it in good style under Bryan Cooper.
Robbie Hennessy 's charge had proved disappointing for connections after a promising start to his career but bounced back to form in style.
Cooper's mount travelled well into contention after the second last and hit the front before the final flight.
The 20/1 shot scooted clear from the last to record a cosy three-length victory over 6/1f Brega Queen
"He wouldn't have the best lungs in the world. He hasn't been in a stable since his last run and I've trained him from a field," said Hennessy.
"If ever a horse deserved to win a race it's him."
Robbie Colgan picked up a one-day ban for excessive frequency on the runner-up while the stewards also interviewed Hennessy about the improvement in form of the winner.
He reported that his charge had travelled well over two miles in the past but failed to pick up while a patient ride over two-and-a-half made the difference today. His explanation was accepted.
