Soaring Monarch caused a 50/1 upset in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at Limerick today as the Peter Fahey trained gelding belied his market position to score under jockey Kevin Manning.
The son of Free Eagle had finished sixth on debut at Dundalk in April 2019 before finishing 13th on his reappearance at Leopardstown last Tuesday.
Dropping back from 1m2f to six and a half furlongs today, he nonetheless drifted on the show from 25/1 to his 50/1 SP before showing plenty improvement to eventually score a two lengths win over well backed and promising newcomer Stalingrad (7/4f).
Fahey wasn't present and Manning later stated “I rode him in Dundalk last year, he is a big tall horse and is still a little bit raw. There was always going to be plenty improve and he handled that ground well and travelled into it well.
“You'd be happy with that.”
