Follow The Sign swooped before the final flight to land the spoils in the two-and-a-half mile maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse this afternoon.
15/8 favourite War Correspondent attempted to make all but had to give way at the second last. Andiamos who had tracked the leader throughout, hit the front – but only briefly.
Robbie Colgan soon passed them out on Follow The Sign and his mount kept on strongly in the closing stages for a length-and-three-quarters success. Grove Field came through well in the closing stages to fill the runner-up spot behind the Oliver McKiernan-trained gelding.
The winner, sent off 2/1 second choice, was not winning out of turn, having been placed on his previous two starts.
“The step up in trip helped a bit as he was running over two miles and I think the better ground probably helped too,” said McKiernan.
“He was crucified with sore shins after he ran in a point-to-point and today was the first day he's really looked right and felt right.”
