Sharjah recorded his 14th career success, as he just got the better of Thomas O'Malley in the 32Red Download The App Handicap.
The eight-year-old gelding provided Andrew Slattery with his first success in the saddle over the course in December, and the young rider again teamed-up with the versatile son of Shamardal this evening.
Trained by Slattery's father Andy, he was available at 16/1 in early shows, opening on-course at 12s before going off a 9/1 chance.
After breaking slowly, he was then settled in mid-division. He was ridden to challenge on the outer early in the straight, and inside the final furlong he went toe to toe with Thomas O'Malley, with just a short head separating them at the line.
The runner-up was returned a 4/1 joint-favourite with Sean Corby in the saddle for Jimmy Finn. Specific Gravity (12/1) completed the placings another three and three parts of a length back in third, with Thomas Sherry aboard for Adrian McGuinness. Shadagann was the other joint-favourite and he finished a disappointing eighth.
"He gave him a great ride after getting left at the start," said Slattery.
"I think he was about fifth last coming past first time but he didn't panic and it just worked out. He gave him a super ride.
"He's a much improved rider in two months. He only weighs 6-12 in colours but he's after maturing from riding here and he's getting better the whole time.
"He was unlucky here two weeks ago when he was beaten a short-head on one and I was hoping it didn't go the wrong way.
"He had his first winner on him and that's his second one now.
"That's 14 races now. He's consistent out and always runs his races."
STEWARDS REPORT
The Stewards interviewed M.J. Tynan, trainer, in relation to the suitability of Shane Cross, a 10 lb claiming apprentice, to ride Little Ambitious in this race, and as to why this horse was led to the start contrary to Rule 153 (vi). Also present was D. Byrne, authorised representative of J.P. O' Brien, master for Shane Cross. Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned who stated that the behaviour of Little Ambitious on this occasion was out of character and it was her first time in a tongue strap. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards reminded M.J. Tynan and D. Byrne of their respective responsibilities in this regard.
