- Regal takes the feature for Swan & Hogan
Regal takes the feature for Swan & Hogan
The feature race on this evenings card at Roscommon, the Leo Dolan Memorial Handicap Hurdle over three miles, went to the Charlie Swan trained, Denis Hogan ridden, Regal Ambition at 12/1.
The 5yo winner was never too far off the pace and led at the last holding off all challengers from there. Cootamundra who was sent off the 10/3 favourite under Ruby Walsh travelled like a winner up the home straight, but didn't produce the goods when asked by his rider, going down by just three parts of a length at the finish. The Lady Granuaile who eventually finished fourth, jumped left at the last and hampered both Gala Dancer (third) and Ballygill Gale (sixth).
The winning son of Kahyasi, was recording his first career win here, after thirteen previous attempts. However he did put in respectable efforts on his last two starts over two and a half miles.
Winning trainer Charlie Swan said afterwards: "He needed every bit of the three miles. He stays really well and he jumps great.
"Its grand to get it for the father-in-law (winning owner, Timmy Hyde), it will keep him off my back for a while!
"I have two runners tonight and they are both No 13, so hopefully it will be lucky for me.
"I’m not sure where he will go next, but it will be over three miles. He will jump a fence in time.
