Progressive all-weather convert Spelga completed a hat-trick of wins at Dundalk today as the Michael Halford trained gelding completed the feat in the opening Leading Jockey&Trainer Championship Handicap.
The son of Sir Percy picked up just E262.50 in total prizemoney in eight previous runs on grass but today completed his Dundalk treble in less than a month, having won twice previously over 1m2f on November 6 and 15.
Spelga today made the step up to 1m4f and following his comfortable two and three parts of a length win over Early Strike jockey Whelan later said “it was a beautiful race to ride in and I got a good run through the race. I followed Billy Lee (third-placed Storm Steps on the one that I thought was the one to beat.
“It was just a matter of not hitting the front too soon on him then. He's a really progressive horse and a typical one of Mick's. He does a great job with them and they keep on improving and improving.
“That was arguably his best run to date. It's great to get three with him.
“The last day he was only winning by half a length whereas today he really hit the line good.
“I'd say the trip definitely helps him.”
