Father and son, trainer and jockey Philip and Luke Dempsey combined for their fifth winner together in the past month as Persian Wind landed the Sponsor At Tramore Rated Novice Chase at Tramore today.
The pair began their winning spell together with Kilkeaskin’s First on September 8 and today Persian Wind battled gamely to hold off the challenge of Knockraha King by a short-head.
Trainer Philip Dempsey later said “I'm delighted, but he nearly threw it away at the last and didn't jump as well today as he normally does - normally he is electric. Luke was lucky to stay on him at the first and it was nearly all over there.
“He seems to have come back stronger this year and there’s a hurdle there for him. The horses are in great form, and the filly in the first was even third, it has been amazing."
Dempsey, who partnered over 100 winners as an amateur jockey, later revealed his own plans to return to the saddle saying "I'm all set for the Charity Race (in memory of John Shortt) on the 19th (October) at Punchestown. I'm on the bike every night and riding out as well. It's getting competitive - that won't be no charity race!"
