Oxx wins with another first-timer
John Oxx sent out a second first-timer to win on the Curragh's eight race card as Riynaaz followed her stable companion History Note by also scoring under Fran Berry in the TRI Equestrian European Breeders Fund Fillies Maiden.
Berry got the Aga Khan's daughter of Cape Cross to the front inside the final furlong and she went on to beat the well-backed fellow 11/4 shot Tupelo Honey (from 4s) by two lengths. The favourite Phrase could manage only seventh.
'Slim' O'Neill, representing Oxx, said: "We're in form at the wrong end of the year but that was nice as this one was a very backward two-year-old. She likes that ground and she'll have to be upped in class now.
"That distance (a mile and one) would be the minimum that she could win over. The Trigo Stakes (at Leopardstown on October 25th – Bank Holiday Monday) would probably be the only option for her now."
