The Michael McCullagh-trained Bold Optimist held the challenge of Cross Border in the closing stages to run out a game winner of the concluding six-furlong maiden at Dundalk.
Oisin McSweeney tucked his mount in behind front-runner Ballysax Lil' Mick before moving smoothly to challenge two furlongs from home.
The 12/1 shot (5/2 this morning) hit the front a furlong-and-a-half from home and was asked to go about his business over a furlong out.
He drifted to his right inside the final furlong but responded well when pressed by 15/8 favourite Cross Border in the closing stages to post a neck success.
The winner was making his first start since finishing fifth on debut over seven at Fairyhouse in mid-July.
McSweeney said: "The cheekpieces were on tonight and he did plenty of running around but, when the second horse has come to him, he has picked up to the line.
"I didn't want to light him up, but sure he jumped so well himself and I just slotted in behind the leaders. He came there cantering, but just pricked his ears in front.
"He could be a fun horse for the winter."
