O'Brien doubles up on Waydownsouth
Waydownsouth was an appropriately named winner at Fairyhouse given events at Croke Park, the well-backed 5/2 favourite bringing up a double for his rider Joseph O'Brien in the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap.
O'Brien gained a fortunate short-head win on Aladdins Cave half-an-hour previously. Here on Pat Flynn's Waydownsouth he kept his mount going in the testing conditions to see-off Prince Of Fashion by half a length.
Michael Gunn, representing the winning trainer, said: "He'll stay at this game until the end of the year. He'll go hurdling then because he does stay well. I'm delighted to see Joseph winning after the near thing in the last. That horse jammed-on (Aladdins Cave) and thankfully he held on as it would have been terrible on a young rider for that to happen."
In the race to be top apprentice Joseph O'Brien now stands on 23 winners, five behind Gary Carroll and Ben Curtis.
