Murphy's Cats pounces late
Fethard based Joe Murphy completed a double at Listowel today when his Maggie The Cat overcame a slow start to win the L.M. Carey & Company Handicap, adding to the success of Rose Hip half an hour previously.
Maggie The Cat, a daughter of Fasliyev, missed the break and lost considerable ground at the start. However, her rider Declan McDonogh refused to panic and eventually brought the filly into the race in the straight, getting her head in front close home for a three parts of a length win over Tatacoa
Afterwards a delighted Joe (J.G) Murphy stated: “I didn't think Maggie The Cat could win after that start but Declan (McDonogh) didn't panic. They probably went a fast pace in front and that helped our filly to get back into the race.”
He added: “she is a well bred filly who is out of a black type-placed mare - even in these recessionary times she is now worth something to breed from!”
