Silverkode supplied Joe Murphy with a deserved first winner of the season when taking the McDonnell’s Bar Newbridge Supporting Junefest Maiden at the Curragh.
The Fethard trainer has gone close on numerous occasions this term, and was certainly not opening his account out of turn.
The Kodiac gelding kept on nicely on debut over six furlongs at Navan last month, and just got up close home here over the minimum trip.
Gary Carroll ’s mount responded really well inside the final furlong, leading in the closing stages to beat the always prominent Snowstar by a length and a half. Tookiedoo kept on to finish just a head further adrift in third.
Murphy said, “He’s a nice horse but I didn’t think he would handle the ground. He handled it better than I thought, and Gary said there is plenty of improvement in him.
“You needed a six-furlong horse in that ground (soft, heavy in places), and we’ll try to stick to three-year-old only races. We have his half-sister who we picked up at the sales last year.”
