Morph Speed added to Tipperary gains achieved in April, bagging a third career success all told in the RACE Academy Apprentice Handicap at Leopardstown.
Again Scott McCullagh was in the plate on the Richard O’Brien-trained five-year-old, and they came from towards the back of the field, ridden and making good headway over a furlong out.
Morph Speed gained a narrow lead inside the final furlong and after a great tussle fended off No Say Ever by a head.
“He's a progressive horse. For some reason he's after ending up 40 days from his last run and that probably wasn't ideal. He's probably better off on a two or three week schedule,” said O’Brien.
“Something like the Apprentice Derby at the Curragh might fit in nicely. A big thanks to his owner Kate Hassett and we're delighted to have him.”
L.T. McAteer, rider of Getback In Paris trained by John F. O'Neill, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount stopped very quickly.
J.M. Sheridan, rider of Twentybore (GB) trained by Eoin Griffin, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount was hampered turning in.
The Stewards received a report from Mr Gordan Rochford, security official, in relation to an interaction he had with Anthony McCann, trainer. Evidence was heard from both parties. Mr. Rochford stated that Mr. McCann became abusive towards him when trying to gain access through the Foxrock Gate entrance. Mr. McCann stated that he had became irrate as he was trying to gain access as quick as possible as his animal became upset. He accepted he had used abusive language and apologised for his actions. Having considered the report, the Stewards were satisfied that Anthony McCann was in breach of Rule 272 and considering his record in this, cautioned him on this occasion.
