Well-supported (5/1 — 4s) Duffys Getaway was one of six horses to race from the basement hurdle rating of 80 in Fairyhouse's Sign Up To Gavin Lynch Racing Handicap Hurdle today but scored a maiden success for owner J.P. McManus and trainer Philip Rothwell.
Duffys Getaway finished unplaced in 13 previous runs but today, under Sunday's Cork National winner Simon Torrens, won well by seven and a half lengths from Kiln Time
Rothwell reported “he had been very disappointing last year but he came back fresh and well after a break. It was the strongest race in the world but it's lovely to get another winner in those colours.
“JP and his family have been very good to me, I have Weihnachts and this guy in training and Weihnachts has won a few. It's lovely to get this guy's head across the line because he had been a bit disappointing.”
