Jimmy and Patrick Mangan were the second father and son, trainer and jockey team to win at Tramore today as jockey Patrick brought his father’s Conna Cross with a daring run to win the Graun Hill Suite For Parties Beginners Chase.
Leader Castlewhite held the inside jumping the second last as Conna Cross chased in third but Conna Cross was soon short of room approaching final fence.
However Jimmy Mangan, almost eagle-eyed, spotted a gap on the inside of Castlewhite, under Donie McInerney, at the final fence and having jumped through, went on to score a two and three parts of a length win.
The win was jockey Patrick Mangan’s first success since Whisky Galore at Sligo in September 2015 and following today’s win, his father and Aintree Grand National winning trainer Jimmy Mangan stated “that race was made for him really and it was a grand introduction for him to fences with a handy field.
“You could always see in his hurdle races that he was going to be a chaser but we won't get excited over that and will take small steps with him. His owners (Hanford's Chemist Ltd) came over from Wales today to see him."
The race earlier winner Persian Wind also scored for father/son team of Philip and Luke Dempsey.
