Robert Jones, successful aboard Knockmehill Lady (12/1) at Fairyhouse yesterday, was again the toast of bookmakers when partnering 14/1 shot Mr Eko to take the Kilsheelan Beginners Chase at Clonmel.
The seven-year-old was not too clever when challenging at the second last but a fine leap at the final fence proved crucial as he kept on well to beat Pocketfullapennies (10/1) by two and a quarter lengths.
The runner-up was all the rage in the offices having been available earlier this morning at 25/1. Referent (12/1) held every chance early in the straight but dropped away to finish another seven lengths back in third. The 15/8 favourite Ross Na Righ fell four out.
Winning trainer Tim Doyle said, “He had plenty of experience but the ground was not ideal as it was a bit tacky for him. We’ll tip away now until the ground gets too quick, and he’ll go for a handicap.”
