Jewel too strong for Ballinrobe opposition

Charlie Swan warmed up for next week's Festival at Ballybrit where he could have up to 15 runners, by landing the concluding bumper at Ballinrobe with the J P McManus-owned (a double for him after Carrigmartin earlier) Jewel In The Sun partnered by Nina Carberry.

This fellow was ridden by Patrick Mullins when finding Har Will too hot to handle at Limerick last time but on this occasion Mullins was on his father, Willie's favourite, Grande Luso He dropped out tamely in the back straight and eventually pulled up although he did cross the line a distance behind.

Nina meanwhile was always on the gallop, she led three furlongs out and she sent the winning Milan gelding clear from two furlongs out, staying on strongly to beat the well-backed Ross Limestone (10s into 11/2) by seven lengths.

Swan remarked: "He stays real well and he is a tough fellow. He'll jump hurdles now. He is from a family that my father had and we still have a few relations at home."
