A day after jockey Davy Russell's retirement, it was business-as-usual but with some sadness for trainer Gordon Elliott today, as he won Punchestown's opening Jim Ryan Services Rated Novice Hurdle with Itswhatunitesus
Ridden by Jack Kennedy, the son of Walk In The Park made all to beat Carnfunnock by four lengths.
Trainer Elliott admitted feeling emotional following yesterday's news, describing long-time ally Russell as “a big part of my team since I started training and he has been a friend as well as a colleague.”
Regarding Alymer Stud's Itswhatunitesus, he added “it was a good performance and I thought Jack gave him a great ride. He got to steady it in front and dictated it well. He said the further he went the better he jumped.
“He’s in all the Graded races but I’d imagine we’ll keep it small if we can. Before the race I didn’t think he’d be staying at two miles but I’m not sure now. I’d say he’ll get two and a half.”
