In his first time outside of maiden company The Mpex Kid defied top-weight, stylishly landing the second division of Sobac Soil.ie Thank You To All Our Customers Handicap at Fairyhouse.
Winning trainer Dot Love and her assistant Ciaran Murphy were just denied by a short head at Gowran yesterday with a 50/1 filly called On The Balcony.
The Mpex Kid is a half-brother to a thirteen time winner in Star Links, and there’s the promise of plenty more to come from the four-year-old son of Tamayuz too.
With Mikey Sheehy up at a price of 10/1, the Love runner stretched away well inside the last to see off the nicely-supported Neyland (25/1 into 11s) by two and a half lengths.
“We're delighted with him. He's straight-forward and we thought he was on a nice mark coming here, he's proved it now,” said Ciaran Murphy.
“He seemed to stay well today too and a mile might be suitable as well.
“We'll make a plan now. He seems to like that ground too, it was no harm that the rain got into it and slowed it up a little bit for him.
“He's a lovely prospect going forward. There is plenty of improvement in him. This was the plan and it worked out, we'll see what the handicapper does now.”
S. Foley, rider of Upwey trained by Mrs Prunella Dobbs, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount never travelled during this race.
