Glenquin Castle got off the mark at the 11th time of asking in the extended three mile handicap chase at Roscommon.
The 14/1 shot faced a stern challenge from Warreedy racing to the last with the pair clear of the remainder.
Mark Walsh got into the drive position early on the run-in and his partner toughed it out best by half a length from Warreedy. Greenway Machine (33/1) and Railway Muice (28/1) finished well behind in third and fourth respectively.
“He's one of these slow burner horses. He'd show you a bit more at home than he does at the races,” said trainer Martin Brassil.
“We were getting a bit frustrated with him and that's why we put headgear on.
“It's probably his first time on really nice ground and on a level track where he was able to travel away more at his ease.
“Mark said he travelled better today than he ever did and maybe it was the fact that we rode him a little bit differently.
“All he does is stay. For a fine big horse by Getaway, he wants nice ground.
“We'll see if there is another suitable race for him like that.” Cailean's Angel the well backed 6/4 favourite, was off the bridle a long way out and was beaten turning for home. She trailed home in 13th place.
