Japan's Grand Jump-bound Blackstairmountain had to settle for the runner-up spot behind Fosters Cross in the Ballsbridge Hurdle at Leopardstown today, with the winner gaining revenge for a defeat to that rival in January.
Leader Mount Colah along with chasing Fosters Cross (under Paul Townend), had the field well strung out throughout and once Fosters Cross moved to the front at the second last, found plenty in the home straight to comfortably hold Blackstairmountain.
Fosters Cross had finished second to Blackstairmountain, when the pair met at Cork in January and following today's win, winning trainer Tom Mullins was quick to point out “the pace-maker made it easier for him but is 11 now and isn't any better than Mr O'Brien (Noel, handicapper) thinks he is!
“He got away from the boys today and that was it. He had no problem with the 2m2f and we might stretch him out further in future and we could go for some of the minor events at Fairyhouse and Punchestown if there are such things! He'll then get a rest before the Galway Festival - that's his main target.”
Runner-up Blackstairmountain's next race is due to be a prep race, in Japan, on March 21 before contesting the Grand Jump in April.
