Flashthelights (13/2) benefitted from a fine waiting ride from amateur jockey Oran McGill to land Wexford's Visit Wexford Handicap Hurdle (Div I) today, scoring for Derry-based trainer Noel Kelly.
Held up mid-field, the eight-year-old was produced to challenge after the second-last and on the run-in, powered home to lead close home, defeating Inchiquin Maid by a half-length.
Flashthelights carries the colours of the delighted Red Ned's Racing Club, which is named after an Armagh bar, and jockey McGill reported "he probably wasn't in love with the fast pace and the ground was the slow side of good so I had to bide my time.
“Turning-in I didn't really think I was going to get there and he missed the second-last but he fought to the line well. He could probably step up to three miles and I'd say might go over fences too as he jumps well. He hit the crossbar a couple of times and is a brilliant wee horse to have."
