Second reserve We'llgowats (16/1) gained a first success at Cork today as the Liam O'Brien trained mare landed the Follow Us On Instagram (Mares) Handicap Hurdle under jockey Conor McNamara.
The seven year old daughter of Dylan Thomas' only previous placing was when finishing last of three runners at Ffos Las last March and was today produced from rear to lead late on the run-in and beat Frazel Express by three parts of a length.
Bennettsbridge based O'Brien later said “she has been disappointing us all along and we thought she'd win a four year old maiden point to point first time out and Jamie Codd rode her. She had been working really but wasn't running like she was working.
“We are happy out with this and she second reserve, having failed to get in to a 0-95 at Sligo on Sunday. She was 31 on the ballot list and today you are going up two classes but what can you do only run. She is also due to come back into season next weekend.
“She will be equally good if not better over a fence.”
He added “we got a phone call at 10am this morning to say she was getting a run and in fairness to Conor he gave her a great ride. I was giving out about him the whole way saying he was up the inner, which was the one place I told him not to be, but they know best!”
