Owner/trainer/breeder Luke Comer registered his latest big-priced winner today as newcomer The Shadow Lingers scored readily at 66/1 on career debut, in Dundalk's opening Book Online @ DundalkStadium.com Maiden.
Slowly into stride under jockey Jack Kearney, the Dick Whittington-sired gelding moved clear of his rivals in the home straight and while also racing green, in the process won in the manner of a useful type. Following the race - and for good measure, the keen four-year-old completed another lap of the course.
Trainer Comer is currently appealing the findings of the IHRB's September referrals committee to suspend his license for three years, after 12 of his horses tested positive for anabolic steroids, and today assistant Jim Gorman reported "The Shadow Lingers showed us lots, but he is very green.
"I thought Easy Way (fifth-placed stablemate) with his experience, might just get the better of him today, but he has plenty of raw ability. He's just so green and that's what I was a bit afraid of.
"We are delighted to get him here and we'll see how he comes on from that."
Regarding the stable's current form, Gorman added “the horses are going really well. They are running well and we have lots running today. The only problem is Dundalk finishes too quickly as we'd love it to continue.
"This is what we train on at home, so the surface suits us."
Comer's previous big-priced winners include 300/1 victor He Knows No Fear at Leopardstown in August 2020 while Navajo River 200/1 chance won at Roscommon last August.
