Dream winner for Hayes
The Paddy Hayes-trained Leah's Dream sent bookmakers home happy when recording a 16/1 surprise debut victory in the John Fletcher Memorial INH Flat Race.
The five-year-old daughter of Heron Island responded gamely to a strong drive by Gerry Mangan to beat 5/2 favourite Here's Jenny by a length and three quarters. Misty Weather (8/1) appeared to be travelling best of all over a furlong out but just didn't find as much as anticipated, and weakened in the closing stages to finish another half length away in third.
The trainer's son and assistant Pat Hayes said, “I thought she was a good mare but to be honest I didn't think she was that good. We have no real plans but she is for sale.”
