Dramatic Conclusion to Down Royal Bumper
There was a dramatic conclusion to the Premier Sports Management Flat Race as Last Draw and Milanette battled it out inside the final furlong.
Colm Sharkey still held the call on Last Draw but his mount under a left hand drive continued to drift away carrying Mikey Fogarty with him on Milanette. Head down riding a finish into the sun, Sharkey failed to spot a spur jutting out on to the track (a piece of railing to save a part of the track) and his mount collided with the rail, Last Draw unseating and Milanette just about recovering after being hampered, going on to be beaten a neck by Ballymak This incident happened over fifty yards from the finish.
Milanette was subsequently disqualified and placed last (took wrong course).
Colm Sharkey got nine days for careless riding.
The incident caused carnage on Betfair's in-running market. The eventual winner, the pre-race favourite Ballymak, was layed at odds off 999/1. A total of four punters managed to get the ceiling price and scooped a windfall of almost ?30,000.(EM)
