Double up for O'Brien on Monte Carlo
Monte Carlo was produced by Joseph O’Brien to cut down Clonbur and win in the shadow of the winning post to give the young jockey a double at Wexford.
He was winning for his father Aidan on the three-year-old son of Montjeu in the extended mile and three furlong maiden at the track for owner Michael Tabor.
The favourite, who looked very well in the parade ring beforehand, was backed from 11/4 to 9/4 on course and won by a head.
Joseph O’Brien said: “He was a bit green, but he did it nicely.”
Clonbur (13/2) travelled strongly throughout the race for Ben Curtis and looked like coming to win it for trainer Thomas McGivern when assuming the lead from Kayalar but got nailed by the Ballydoyle representative despite O'Brien putting up one pound overweight.
Kayalar, who cut out the pace, took third placed honours for John Oxx and Johnny Murtagh at 14/1.
