Grandma Dotty lunged late, under Fran Berry, to land a bit of a touch in the fillies maiden at Roscommon. Supernovae was a warm order (9/10 to 8/11f) in the mile-and-a-half contest and set out to make all under Pat Smullen.
She was strongly pressed by Angels Guard Thee in the straight and was all out inside the final furlong to hold that rival at bay.
Grandma Dotty had to wait for a gap after getting stuck on the rail down the straight but once the Hurricane Run filly saw daylight she powered home in the final furlong.
Supernovae looked to have done enough after a battling performance only to be denied right on the line by the late charge of Charlie Swan's charge.
The winner had been backed from 14/1 in the morning into as low as 11/2 and was a solid 7/1 shot on course.
She had shown promise on her sole start at Dundalk in July when a staying on sixth.
"She stays well. We've been unable to run her as we've been waiting on a bit of nice ground and that's about the best we've been able to get for a while," said Swan.
"She ran a nice race first time out and was still a bit green there first time on grass. We'll see what the handicapper does before we decide where she goes next."
Berry was hit with a one-day whip ban after the race.
