Caldwell Diamond (10/1) caused a minor upset to win Fairyhouse's Winter Festival 3rd & 4th Dec Maiden Hurdle today, scoring for trainer Gordon Elliott, jockey Jack Kennedy and Caldwell Construction Ltd.
By Sholokhov, the same sire as Elliott's Gold Cup winner Don Cossack, Caldwell Diamond led past dual bumper winner The Big Doyen (5/2) before the final flight and while running green on the run-in, stayed on for a length win. The Short Go (8/13f) failed to land a blow on reappearance, finishing third.
Elliott reported “he's a big baby; you can see why he didn't win a bumper, he's so big.
“To be honest we thought he would come on from the run. He was half off the bridle at the third-last but he galloped.”
