English Deer got up in the shadow of the post to round off his year on a winning note in the six-furlong handicap at Dundalk. Yulong Baoju looked to have done enough when getting to the front inside the final furlong but was nabbed on the line as Chris Hayes delivered his mount wide for a short-head victory.
Paul Deegan’s charge was just held in a competitive event at the Curragh last time and was adding to his previous victory in a Down Royal maiden.
Deegan is hopeful that the 5/2 winner will develop into a decent sprinter next term:- “He did it well and is a progressive sort of horse.
He had a wind-op which seems to have worked a treat,” said Deegan.
“In another stride or two he might have won at the Curragh. Hopefully he’ll be a fair horse next year. I’d say he’s Listed or Group 3 at the moment and hopefully he can go on from here.
“That’s him for the year - we’ll leave it at that. He seems versatile ground wise. He goes with a bit of a cut and on proper good ground.” Rummaging was sent off the 7/4 favourite and was three-parts of a length back in third.
