“She’s a well-bred filly and it’s nice to get a winning bracket with her. She stuck at it well. It was a good brave performance,” said Dermot Weld after Convocate (8/1) got off the mark in the mile and two maiden at Leopardstown.
Convocate had been eighth on debut at the Curragh also in a mile and a quarter maiden, won by The Vatican.
Pat Smullen did the steering tonight and guided her through to battle Magical Steps (8/1) inside the final furlong. She soon got on top to win by a length and three parts. Streaming By put in a good effort on his first racecourse outing when being placed for Richard Brabazon. He was a nose behind Magical Steps at 33/1.
Murphy’s Delight was the nicely-backed 11/10 favourite. However, after leading throughout he was headed with a furlong to race and finished a head out of the places in fourth. Lioneer (33/1) was withdrawn for refusing to load. There was no Rule 4 deduction.
