Ivan Ryan, twin brother of Sunday's crowned champion apprentice jockey James Ryan, registered a first winner today, landing Fairyhouse's concluding Sign Up To Fairyhouse Newsletter Handicap Hurdle on Mabel In May (12/1).
Ryan, son of Mairead Ryan (nee Curran) who represented Ireland in two equine events at the 1992 Olympics, had previously ridden a point-to-point winner and today, gave easy victor Mabel In May a polished ride.
Initially held up in rear division, Mabel In May made headway along the inside with half-a-mile to race and having led before the last, quickened clear to win well from Mr McWhinny
Successful trainer Conor Maxwell commented “it's a big day for Ivan, who is with me six days a week and does a lot for me, as does his brother James.
“After his brother won the apprentice title, it must have been a case of 'if he can do it, I can do better'! There is good competition between the two and I'm delighted to have given both boys winners.”
He added “Mabel In May was a bit disappointing the last day but never got into it but I thought three miles here would really suit her. She won better than I thought she would and it's great for the owners.”
