Derinlaur gave Brian Cawley his first winner as a claiming professional when making all to land a bit of a touch (14s in the morning into 8/1) in the Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Hurdle at Naas.

In the main the well-bred son of Pistolet Bleu, a course bumper winner, jumped well and Cawley, a brother of 'Squeaky,' did well to make light of the mistake that the eight-year-old made at the third last.

Up the straight the Charlie Swan-trained and Mrs Ann O'Brien-owned gelding, off the track for over two years previously, kept up the gallop to see off Representing (having her first start for Colin Bowe).

Swan said afterwards: "We needed patience as he was off for 2 years. He obviously likes this track though as he won a bumper here by fifteen lengths.

"We'll see how he is, we've no plans and we'll take every day as it comes. He has to go left-handed as he leans a bit to the left. He has had leg trouble and as mine have been running bad that is a bit of a relief."
