Julie Cashin & Evan Dwan recorded their second success of the season at Thurles, as they combined to take the Killinan Handicap Hurdle with Thecornerhouse
A fine third of 20 when last seen at Gowran in November, the daughter of Shirocco was sent off the 9/2 favourite (drifted from 9/4 early) to go a few places better this afternoon.
Given a patient ride by Dwan, the John Whelan owned victor made steady headway on the final circuit.
She was squeezed for room when coming with her effort from two out but when the desired gap appeared on the run-in, she burst through between rivals to lead in the final 50 yards, going on to prevail by half-a-length.
The Jimmy Mangan trained Chelseas Friend (10/1) filled the runner-up spot under Mike O'Connor, while top-weight Presenting Point (6/1) was another half-a-length back in third on his first start for Brian O'Keeffe.
Cashin said: "She's a good honest filly. We bred her and John (Whelan) bought her off us.
"She's out of a good hardy mare (dual winner Vic Chic) and she seems to be going down that route as well.
"She stays forever and she's honest. She'll go home and eat every nut, she's good like that, and she'll be as fresh as she was yesterday.
"Evan gave her a super ride, he's as cool as a cucumber. She jumped super and it's onwards and upwards now."
STEWARDS REPORTS
The Raceday Stewards reviewed an incident after the penultimate hurdle involving Presenting Point, ridden by D.J. O'Keeffe, placed third, Rideau Canal ridden by S.W. Flanagan, placed fourth, and Thecornerhouse, ridden by E. Dwan, placed first, where it appeared that Thecornerhouse was tight for room when trying to challenge between horses. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the matter, the Raceday Stewards were satisfied that no further action was warranted.
L. Quinlan, rider of Toor Hawk trained by Ms.M.Flynn, reported to the Clerk of the Scales that his mount flipped her palate three hurdles from the finish and furthermore was lame on pulling up.
