Byrnes lands gamble in Ballinrobe opener
Charles Byrnes landed a gamble in the opening Western People Maiden Hurdle at Ballinrobe when Cyborg (20/1 - 3/1) came home in front with Robbie McCarth deputising for the unwell Keith Schous.
McCarth travelled well into the straight to take up on the lead on the run-in to score by a convincing two lengths.
Their task was made easier when runner-up Ballyadam Brook made a last flight error.
Winning trainer Byrnes said afterwards: "Robbie [McCarth] gave him a grand ride and the seven pounds made all the difference."
"The horse likes the better ground and he's a great jumper so we'll keep him on the go throughout the summer on both the flat and over hurdles."
"We may look at something at Galway for him, he'll make a nice chaser in time."
Charles Byrnes made a request to the Stewards to subsitute nominated rider Keith Schous with Andrew McNamara due to the nominated rider being unwell.
Evidence was heard from the Charles Byrnes who stated that Keith Schous the horse regular work rider had informed him at 12.30 the he was feeling unwell and may not be able to travel. The trainer added that he did not look for a replacement until arriving at the track and having satisfied himself that the ground was suitable he contacted Andrew McNamara to ride the horse. He selected the rider as he has ridden for the owner regularly in the past.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards refused the request in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 3 but informed the trainer that they allow a rider with similar experience to the original nomination.
Subsequently the Stewards allowed a request for the horse to be ridden by Robbie McCarth seven pound claimer.
