Owners Brendan Tolan from Stamullen, Co Meath and Des Flynn from north county Dublin made their first trip to the north a profitable one when watching Brecan Boy upset long odds-on favourite Cause Of Causes in Downpatrick’s opening two mile maiden hurdle.
Cause Of Causes was sent off 2/9 for Gordon Elliott and Paul Carberry but Brecan Boy (7/1) kept on best after the last under Andrew Lynch to win by a length. Outsider White Feather at 33/1 took third a neck back from Cause Of Causes.
Winning trainer Peter Casey wasn’t present at Downpatrick but owner Tolan said: “The trainer said he should run well but he had a bit of a cough during the week.”
Elizabeth Flynn who is one of the three owners was at home sick but her husband Des said: “That'll give Elizabeth a tonic. He’s bred to be a sprinter but there’s distance on the dam’s side. The trainer said he needs good ground.”
