Nineteen year old Ross Berry, son of point-to-point great John Berry, partnered his first winner today, steering the Colin Bowe trained John Adams (8/1) to win Punchestown's concluding Total Event Rental Handicap Chase.
The son of Presenting was today ridden by Berry for the first time, having unseated two different riders on three of his four previous starts.
The pair raced prominently throughout today's race and while Berry was at work for much of the final half mile, moved clear at the last and beat Exit To The West by seven and a half lengths.
Trainer Bowe wasn't present and afterwards Berry, also from Wexford, reported “that’s my first winner and my first ride over fences. I ride out three days a week with Henry de Bromhead and three days with Colin Bowe.
“That was unreal. I thought it would never come and you always have that doubt in the back of your mind.
“I tried to jump off in front and ended up second or third. Coming down the hill he started to run away again and I knew he was in my hands then. I knew I had him where I wanted.”
Berry is a son of trainer John Berry, who was a three-time Champion Point-to-Point Jockey and went through a six-race card at Caim point-to-point in 1988.
John Adams is the name of the second president of the United States.
