Alaivan wins his match with Carlito
They may have had identical ratings but punters were of the strong opinion that Alaivan (4/7 in the morning into 1/3) would have Carlito Brigante s measure in the match for the opening Tote Placepot Races 1 to 6 Fairyhouse Hurdle.
Alaivan was produced after the second last to go on and beat Carlito Brigante who tried to battle back but on the run in the victorious Kalanisi gelding went on to prevail by four lengths under Andrew McNamara. There had been three and a quarter lengths between the pair when they finished third and fourth respectively behind Soldatino in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham last March.
Winning trainer, Edward O'Grady, successful with another Thomas Barr-owned horse, Ruler Of All at Thurles on Thursday, said: "It was a pity the race cut up so much. It is tricky with second season horses to find opportunities and for me this race served its purpose.
"He would have otherwise had to run in the Red Mills or the Irish Champion Hurdle. It was tragic that this race wasn't better supported. He is in the Tote Gold Trophy and he is in at Cheltenham but he'll hardly do both.
"The owner would quite like to consider the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham and he'll also be entered in a few handicaps there as well."
Stan James go 66/1 from 80/1 about Alaivan for the Champion Hurdle.
