There was a massive boilover in the Listed Edmund & Josie Whelan Memorial Listowel Stakes at Listowel as 80/1 outsider Maud Gonne Spirit got up in the final strides for Jessica Harrington.
She looked to have plenty on her plate in third, a few lengths off Curvature and Miramis on the turn approaching the final furlong.
Miramis went on from Curvature inside the final furlong in what appeared to be a private battle, however, Maud Gonne Spirit really found her stride in the final 100 yards and devoured the ground in the closing stages to mug the pair. She got up by a neck from Miramis (17/2) and her stablemate, Curvature, was half a length further away in third at 16/1.
Jockey Nathan Crosse said: "She loves soft ground, Jessie and all the team have done a great job getting her ready for today as she hasn't had a whole pile of runs this year. It's very important for her to get a black-type win today.
"We went a good gallop, her fitness was good and she is a good, honest filly. Everything worked out perfectly."
