Gavin Cromwell saddled a 1-2 in the 1m6f Kilberry Handicap at Navan but not as most would have expected with Charlies Darling recording a 33/1 shock to beat the well-fancied Macinamillion
Robert Whearty ’s mount struck the front about two furlongs out but tended to hang left under pressure before keeping on well to score by half-a-length with Kermiya the same distance back in third.
Not surprisingly a stewards enquiry was called with the head-on camera showing the second had suffered some interference but the places remained unaltered.
Cromwell said, "I was watching it from the stands and I'll have to see a head-on but obviously he leaned in on top of him.
“We fancied the second horse, I thought he ran a cracker the last day when the ground was just a bit too quick for him. The step up in trip here today, and the little bit of ease in the ground suited.
“Charlie Darling actually ran a good race the last day in a claimer. I couldn't believe he was only in for four thousand and nobody claimed him.
“That was grand, claiming 5lb off him and it was nice. Robert is down to 5lb the other day and he's coming on.”
