Flavin planning Cheltenham return with Midnight Our Fred
Midnight Our Fred has unfinished business at Cheltenham later this month as the John Flavin-trained gelding ended a frustrating spell today, when landing Gowran's Hospitality At Gowran Park Handicap Chase. Sat 05th OctBrideswell Lad gains Killarney National honours
Wexford owner/trainer Seamus Neville combined with fellow County man J J Slevin to land the Tote Killarney National Handicap Chase, the penultimate event on today's card at the Kerry venue. I thought the trip was short but once I saw the withdrawals, knew the race had half-fallen apart. He loves that ground and it takes a fair one to jump with him as he is an unbelievable jumper. He is better going left-handed and we're going back to Cheltenham in three weeks' time. He had been eligible for an amateur riders' chase that day but has won too far today, although I think Danny did that on purpose, to keep the ride! He might now get in off bottom weight in the 3m1f William Hill Handicap Chase. I have 20 horses for the track this winter, have between 10 and 12 for point-to-points and buying and selling is all part of my job.

As Hugh just said to me, he is still a big, raw baby and you have to be organising him the whole time. Up and down through the undulations and the jumps, you'd just have to keep him organised. Hopefully there is still a bit of improvement in him. He is still only learning and I've given him plenty of time as he is only a big frame of a horse. Hopefully that'll stand to him in the long run. I thought going down the back that he might be in trouble but to be fair to him, every time Hugh asked him, he kept responding and that's a good sign. He is declared to run in Tramore on Friday in a beginners chase for horses rated 102 or less over hurdles. We will see how he is in the morning. He jumps hurdles like they are fences, he is a machine to jump. Whenever he does go over fences, he will be better again hopefully. I had dam and won a few point-to-points with her. Thankfully Florence and Emily sent me this fella then and they knew I'd look after him. They are great people and have stuck with me since I started training.
