Whatharm just held the late charge of Plum Perfect to land the spoils in the first division of the apprentice handicap at Dundalk.

The Pat Flynn-trained top-weight had to be switched out after meeting traffic two furlongs from home in the mile contest but picked up well for Ben Coen to lead over a furlong out.

Plum Perfect started to roll late on but the line came just in time for Whatharm as the Canford Cliffs gelding prevailed by a short-head.

The winner was well backed from 10/1 in the morning into 9/2 second favourite and was recording his second career win after a success at Gowran in June.

Danny Grant (representing Pat Flynn) said “We brought him here a couple of weeks ago and he seemed to handle it well.

“I thought on the soft ground last time he was carrying his head a bit high.

“He was doing nothing in front and I’d say we’ll ride him a bit further back the next time.”
