A gamble on Goose Man (11/4 into 6/4) was foiled by The White Volcano (8/1) in the French Village Novice Handicap Hurdle at Down Royal.
Goose Man was slightly awkward on landing at the last and the John Woods-trained and Conor Maxwell-ridden The White Volcano went on to keep the market-leader at bay by a length and a quarter.
"He stayed on well; he won a point-to-point over three miles on that sort of ground," said Woods.
"We were expecting a good run on that ground. Hopefully he'll be out again soon.
"Conor (Maxwell) gave him a lovely ride and he was very confident on him.
"The owner (Philip White) has a big tyre place in Armagh."
