As was the case at Wexford on August 29th, when he got the job done with Manny Owens, Adrian Keatley struck at the first time of asking with Captain Carleton (9/2 joint favourite) in the Crowne Plaza Race & Stay Apprentice Handicap at Dundalk.
Sean Corby brought his mount through from the rear to challenge a furlong out, and he was ridden to lead over a hundred yards out, keeping on well to hold Catchy Lass by half a length.
"That's his first run for me and I'm delighted with him," said Keatley.
"I had a look through his races and thought he threw away the apprentice derby when he looked to have it in the bag in the straight.
"I told Sean to ride him with confidence and that I'd rather see him beat coming too late than being there too soon. He gave him a great ride.
"He's enjoying the Flat so we'll keep him on the go and hopefully pick up another prize. I think there is a nice handicap hurdle in him."
The Stewards interviewed C.P. Hoban, rider of What Lies Ahead concerning his use of the whip in in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that the rider was in breach of Regulation 10.3(a), in that he had used his whip down the shoulder in the fore hand position. Having considered his previous good record, the Stewards cautioned him.
The Stewards fined Adrian Paul Keatley, trainer, €350 for lodging a passport in respect of Captain Carleton, the winner of this race, in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91.
