Everyone loves a bargain and none are better at finding ones than trainer Damian English whose basement purchase Bluesbreaker gained a fourth career win at Dundalk this evening in the opening Dundalk Business Club 2018 Handicap.
Ridden by jockey Rory Cleary, the six year old gelding raced with the pace throughout and in the end beat off Free To Roam by half a length.
English operates with limited budgets and purchased Bluesbreaker for just 800gns at Tattersalls in July 2015. Remarkably English paid that same figure for stable star Geological known as the '800 wonder' in the Co Dublin yard, who has himself earned over E100,000 for English and his Grougha Stables Limited.
Following Bluesbreaker's win, English stated "it wasn't undeserved. He ran a blinder here over five before Christmas, and then we took the blinkers off here the last day over a mile but he was still a bit too keen. We dropped him back to five tonight and he was brilliant.
"That's his fourth win and the fourth time Rory has won on him so he definitely has the key to him. He'll tip away here and is a big, fat horse and hard to get fit. Cork in April is going to be his main aim as he grows an extra leg on soft ground. He just gets away with the all-weather here.
"We have to keep tipping away here just to maintain his fitness."
