Bergin off the mark at second attempt
Dave Bergin looks a name to remember after the 18-year-old rode his first winner aboard Cool Athlete in the second division of the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap at Tipperary.
The Fethard lad was having only his second ride and showed a cool head to guide the 4/1 favourite to victory.
The David Marnane-trained gelding hit the front with over a furlong-and-a-half to run and kept on well to hold the late surge of Gagnant by half-a-length.
It was a good night for the Bergin family as Dave's father Denis also bred the Dandy Nicholls' trained Inxile
The young jockey, who has been riding out in Marnane's for two years is set to receive his leaving cert results next week.
"Dave is going to be a very good jockey when he strengthens up," said Marnane afterwards.
"Hopefully the winner will keep progressing. He's won twice now for the owners."
