Footprint isn't the easiest horse to win with, but when you've guided home an Irish National winner earlier in the week, getting a sprinter to the number one in a six furlong event on the polytrack is a relatively straight-forward task. Andrew Thornton accomplished the feat on Footprint in the concluding Racing At Dundalk Handicap.
Pulled out to deliver his challenge from over a furlong out, the successful Footstepsinthesand gelding came home strongly to lead in the closing stages, going on to beat Battleroftheboyne by two lengths. Gamble of this event, Empirico (7s into 7/2) missed the break and ended up having to settle for fourth.
Pat Martin trains Footprint and he carries the Lucky Spring silks of owner Raymond Moore.
Martin said: "That was kind of overdue. We've been calling him all sorts of names but it's probably been our own fault as he's been getting to the front too soon.
"He didn't seem to be travelling there but he kept on great. He'll stay at six or seven furlongs now." (AM & EM)
